The track connects the Tons to the Dhumarkandi Pass at an altitude of 5300 meters from the Bhagirathi valley, which is between Swargahramini (6252 m) and Bandarpanch (6320 m). The trek is known for its complex location and unpredictable weather. The pass is said to have been discovered in 1815 by James Bailey Fraser, a foreign national. His collected information suggests that this pass was popular among villagers in ancient times, reaching the remote parts of the Ravine Valley (upper parts of the Tons Valley) as a short cut to cross the Bhagirathi valley. In fact, the same route was used by merchants and invaders for years.
It is a spectacular and scenic spot that takes you towards the Ruinsara Lake before descending 5000 meters of Yamunotri. After this it is an easy soothing descent. On the way, you will find devotees returning from Yamunotri temple to fulfill their prayers. The path of lovely woodlands, wildflower meadows, alpine flowers, avian guests and various river crossings will take you along this route. Stones covered with stones, debris, peacocks and icy stones are visible all the way till reaching Dhumdhar.
