Gomukh Tapovan Trek

Considered one of the four Dhams (the others being Yamunotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath), Gangotri is said to be the mythological source of the Ganga river, and the spot, where Bhagirath worshipped Lord Shiva and mother Ganga descended on earth. Lord Shiva is said to have received the river in his matted locks at Gangotri.

Gaumukh(3889m) The source of river Bhagirathi is also considered the true source of river Ganga. The area is peaceful and surreal, and offers stunning views of Mt. Shivling and the Bhagirathi group of mountains, and can be reached after an 18 km trek from Gangotri.

Tapovan (4300m) is an area beyond Gaumukh consisting of a beautiful meadow, at the feet of Mt. Shivling for those in need of peace and adventure, a further 5 Kms from Gaumukh.

Nandanvan (4337m) Located on the far side of the Gangotri glacier opposite to Tapovan this small high altitude meadow is by no means lesser than Tapovan, offering stunning views of surrounding peaks.

Vasuki Tal (4463m) A further ascent starting from Nandanvan, and following the Chaturangi glacier brings one to the Emerald green Vasuki Tal lake.

And the ground transforms to sandy and crumbly (a point en route called the silent zone is so fragile, that a loud noise or a thud might initiate a rockslide from above) The trek further to Bhojvasa is along a the path that slowly flattens out and dips suddenly to reveal Bhojvasa with a small temple and a potential campsite near the river.
